Our proud mudskipper

When I was Noah's age I built forts to defend against the bad guys. He builds forts and pretends to be a mudskipper. After the 5th time Campbell tore it down and he got mad at her he brought the problem to me.

I explained the mudskipper's tunnels are flooded every time the tide changes and has to start over clearing out the tunnel of mud. So his sister is just playing the part of the endless cycle of nature and the constant shifting of the tides.

His eyes lit up like you wouldn't believe. He ran to the other room and proclaimed "Cam, that's awesome!"

I don't know if it's the amount of information available to kids the Internet provides today. Possibly it's the amazing videos of Planet Earth or Life. Maybe we just know how to be informative and entertaining. Whatever the reason, our children know more about the world we live in at 6 than I knew at 15. They are able to experience things we either read about in an encyclopedia or were at the mercy of whatever happened to be airing on TV on a Saturday morning. Now we can watch webcams of Eagle nests hatching and how the parents care for them-LIVE! Noah can hold my phone to the sky and it points out planets, constellations, and nebula. When a plane flies overhead an app can tell us where it came from, where it's headed, and what it's carrying.

Jenna was always scared of overexposing Noah to too much information when he was in preschool. She lives in the world of achievement and academics and she (rightfully) feels kids are beat over the head with curriculum from the moment they walk into a kindergarten classroom. She wanted him to just be a kid. The only problem is Noah CONSUMES information like it was his last meal. Maybe I just can't remember what it was like as a kid but what's available today can be overwhelming but our children are so remarkably adaptable they breathe it in and make it part of everyday.

When Noah asks me something I don't know he immediately says "let's look it up." He doesn't mean at some later point when it's possible. He means right now. I hold a button on my phone and ask it aloud for the tide schedule for western Australia (so we can check to see of the mudskipper is currently underwater). Then it tells me. Then he goes right back to playing having totally assimilated the information like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Our orange belt

Noah loves karate. He's worked so hard.  He came into the last cycle partway so he's been stuck on white belt for a lot longer than the usual 6 weeks and he's had his forms down pat for a month.  This weekend was his first graduation and I know I'm his dad but I'll have to tell you he was a rockstar.  He was loud, he had perfect form, and he had all the answers for the judges. It was made even more special since Jana, Melissa, Mamaw and Papaw were there to see him. Today's his first time to go with his new orange belt and he's so excited he can't stand it.

Too difficult to imagine

One of the hard things is limiting the number of photos in photo gallery.  Personally, I'd put them all up but that is a waste of space and bandwidth.  The default limit on this site is 30 images so I try to adhere to that.  Picking out the 30 then becomes an exercise in how much editing is necessary.  Short version is I'm working on it.

I'll share this photo with you now because I've flagged it as a favorite.

Back to normal

After only a few days we are back to normal around here. Noah was excited to see his friends yesterday. Cam couldn't wait to get to Stephanie's. Jenna and I...work was long and miserable :)

I'll post a photo gallery when I get a chance as well as publishing the posts I wrote while there. Just trying to get back in the swing.

Here's a pic from this morning that'll tide you over though.

Self-inflicted busy day

Busy days usually make us grumpy but this one was self-inflicted so it just made bedtime easy. We went for a bike ride at Lake Fayetteville. Noah is becoming quite the bike rider. He made it 3 miles without nary a complaint. He had to walk up the big hills and had one good scare going down another but overall he's rockin and rollin. When we were done, the climbing wall at Lewis and Clark was open so we gave it a go. Jenna rang the bell and Noah made it about halfway. His legs gave out on him so I figure next time we'll do the wall first. Throw in church, 2 workouts, choir, and Cam's nap and it was a pretty full day.

Happy Holidays 2011

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas.  We were able to see almost every family member over the past week. We enjoyed Christmas morning at our house then we loaded up for the LA tour.  Last night I was going through the aftermath and was amazed how blessed our children are.  Not just from the gifts but from the large number of people who love them and want to contribute to their holiday. I'll put a gallery up soon.  Until then, I hope everyone has a happy and safe New Year. Cheers.

p.s. If you want a little holiday game, click the picture above for a larger view and try to find Noah.

Watch Noah's Christmas Program Live

Noah is in the Crown Kids Singers at our church. It's kindergarten through 5th grade and they have been practicing hard since Thanksgiving.

I'll post pictures tomorrow but you can watch it live on Ustream. The link below is the channel which is currently offline but the program is during the 630 service at the Pontiac campus. It should be up at 630 or shortly before.
